Rescued: Your Next, Best Friend

Merritt Milam | October 1, 2019

Someone once said that a rescue dog is the best breed. If you have been fortunate enough to adopt a rescue pet, consider this a confirmation of that faithful decision. If you have not and would like to know more about the benefits of adopting your next, best friend, I encourage you to read further.

Every year 8 to 12 million dogs, cats, puppies and kittens are euthanized because there are simply not enough homes for them. By adopting a pet, you help reduce the number of animals in shelters and help break the cycle of overpopulation Most rescues can’t help that they are homeless. Unfortunately, when they find themselves in a shelter or rescue, it’s because they were lost, abandoned, or given-up. They need a second chance at a forever home…a home where they can make special memories. The following points are offered for consideration.

Adult Rescues
Many of the rescues offered are adult pets who have been surrendered by an owner. These dogs and cats make great pets because they often have already been house and crate trained.

A Cost-Effective Option
Shelters and rescues help find homes for pure and mixed breed pets. Unlike the initial cost of a purebred dog, adopting a rescue can be a very economical option to finding your next, best friend. Because a rescue has had their exams, vaccines, and been spayed or neutered, this makes adoption less expensive than most purebred dogs. Many rescues have also been microchipped. This makes a reunion much more likely should they be lost.

Prior Care
Pets from shelters receive great care. They are fed a healthy diet, exercised regularly, and are up to date on their exams and vaccinations. Many are cared for by foster parents, providing a loving home and family environment while waiting for their forever home.

You Can Help
On Saturday, October 12 from 2-6 pm, Wags ‘N Whiskers Rescue will hold its 4th Annual Pupkins & Pints Fundraiser. This is a great opportunity to have fun, a few brews, and support the rescue’s mission to feed, house, and find new homes for our furry friends.

This year’s event will be held at The Grocery Brewpub in Homewood. We’ll have our annual raffle, pet and parent costume contest, pet pictures, and lots more. A new, limited edition t-shirt will also be available for purchase to help support the rescue. Thanks to the following corporate sponsors for their support and participation in this year’s fundraiser. We appreciate all you do for our furry friends.
