5 New Year Resolutions for You and Your Pet

Merritt Milam | December 23, 2016

It’s that time of year again when we all start thinking about resolutions for the New Year. Although it’s easy to list all of the things you would like to achieve, the hard part is actually following through with your plans. One of the best ways to hold yourself accountable is to incorporate others into your resolutions. And who better to have by your side during this time than man’s best friend? Whether your goal is to drop some extra pounds, get organized or pursue a healthier lifestyle, your dog is a great partner to join in on these year’s resolutions.

Here are our top five New Year’s resolutions for you and your pet:

Try a New Activity

Red Mountain Park is home to 15 miles of trail systems that offer exciting and diverse terrain. Whether it’s soaring through long-leaf pines or kicking back with your four-legged friend at Remy’s Dog Park, this park has some great options to explore the great outdoors with your pup. Start planning your 2017 outdoor activities by learning more about some of Alabama’s pet-friendly state parks.

Play More

Does your pup easily get bored with his old, worn out toys? This year, why not treat your pet to a monthly subscription to BarkBox. Each month, a box is delivered with four to six innovative toys and healthy treats that will keep you and your pet entertained until the next one arrives.

Teach Your Pup Some New Tricks

It’s never too late to learn a new trick or two. Wags University is offering a tricks training class beginning January 10 through February 14 so that you and your pet can show off his new skills all year long. This six-week course features 30 fun tricks that will awe and delight! We’ll help teach your pooch to high five, jump through a hoop, play a piano, skateboard and do the hokey pokey.

Run (or Walk) a 5k

Take part in Birmingham’s premiere dog-friendly 5k and 1-mile fun run! Hand in Paw’s Mutt Strut is a fun-filled day for not only the avid runner and dog-lover, but for the whole family. Sign up for this year’s Mutt Strut on April 15, 2017 to help achieve your resolution to get healthier in 2017. For more information visit Hand in Paw.

Get organized

The beginning of a new year is a great time to get your finances, house work and miscellaneous projects in order. Guarantee some piece of mind when it comes to your dog’s health by starting a pet savings fund or considering pet insurance in case of an emergency. Throw away old toys, dog beds and other accessories to get a fresh start. Also, make sure your pup has adequate ID by getting a new collar or updating his microchip information.

It only takes a little push, or maybe some puppy dog eyes, to start making a difference in the well-being of both you and your pet. From all of us here at Wags ‘n Whiskers, Happy New Year and good luck on your resolutions!
